Things I Have Learned This Term (Through The Most Brutal Teacher: Experience)
1. You're not good enough to NOT use (video) reference.
2. Animating using a layering method makes more sense after rough pose-to-pose blocking. Otherwise, GOOD LUCK getting any kind of flow in your work.
3. Work clean with clarity and purpose.
4. Just sitting down and animating on the computer is not the best way to explore different acting choices. Acting it out (video reference) and thumbnailing is MUCH easier, faster, and better.
5. Don't expect to cram 5 weeks worth of animation in the two nights before your shot is due. PACE yourself.
6. Your shot is only as good as your weakest pose.
7. All-nighters don't work. You'll do slipshod work and you'll eventually burn out, probably sooner than later.
8. If you multi-task, your work will multi-SUCK. Quality comes from focus, not distraction.

kenshi, very insightful posts!
been reading your blog for a while, I really like how you think and draw your conclusions....
couple things I noticed,
127-130, 133-138 she's moving all at the same time, maybe drag and overlap the head and break up the spine a bit. you might wanna simplify that section with one arc, sorta thing, it kinda goes and stops, goes and stops, to different directions...dont know if that makes sense, send me a pm if you'd like further clarification on it.
pop on 300-301-302, before 300 shes coming at a path, 301 she breaks that path coming forward and 302 she goes back to path...looks like you have a sneaky key or bump in the curve of your root there.
your ref is pretty strong, I definitelly think you have a good instinct on acting, which is really to your advantage...so never forget to use that as much as possible, I think it's definitelly one of your strenghts.
Dont overstress about this, it's looking good, just a matter of cleaning it up and really pushing it on a frame by frame basis, to really get what you want, and it's not as far from done as you might think...
it will be fun seeing what you come up with for your short
Cheers and keep at it! :)

Hey Fernanda & Brian! Thanks for leaving comments on my blog here.
F: I'll take a look at those sections you pointed out. There are so many areas where pops are happening all over the place... i still don't feel satisfied with a lot of the main things, so i'll probably work out the bigger stuff and only worry about the small stuff when the shot is ready for that kind of thing...
i think it doesn't look "animated" enough. kinda stiff, no?
B: We'll miss you at AM! i hope to keep more current with my blog so i have stuff to show and actually use this thing to get feedback from everywhere outside of the AM microcosm.
i'm beginning to see just how far behind i am, but i'm not going to give up.
never.
:-)

Hi Kenshi!! great to see your animation, you are definitely strong in the dramatic heart strings moments and I'm glad you are persuing that type of animation. I think this assignment turned out great so far, lots of heart in it. Great acting and great acting reference, I can't believe you tried to bypass that super important step, it's a must for this kind of advaced acting animation. Keep using that tool of reference because you are lucky you have the acting chops that will bring the reference to life.

Thanks Anthea! great to hear from you.
Yeah, I don't know what i was thinking, not doing reference til the end. I guess I was trying to go more graphic, but i think you have to have a really, really solid body mechanics foundation down in order to even think about doing that.
So, we'll see you up in the bay soon, right? I hear you and Reb are coming up in May.
take care! will be great to catch up.
